Teaching and Learning using Second Life: Shopping in SL

In the words of David Deeds.....step by step getting started with shopping in SL
Every SL noob (newbie, that is) wants FREE STUFF!
  • See the Search box in the upper righthand corner of the viewer? Type FREEBIES and press the Enter key.
  • The Find dialog box displays. The default tab is "All Results." You can narrow it down by either clicking the "Classifieds" tab at the top or "Places" at the bottom. There are various ways to filter results...and this is the key to successful SL shopping. It's easier if you're looking for something specific...but if you search for, e.g., "clothes" you're going to be sifting through thousands of results.
  • If your students stated they are under 18 when they signed up, no worries about them getting to an adult location. The link might be available, but when they try to go, they'll get an error message.
  • Keeping the "Search" tab at the top selected and then selecting "Places" often works OK when you're shopping for an item you want to buy. Clicking "Classifieds" often can narrow the results too much...but then sometimes it can focus on exactly what you want.
  • Example: I'm looking around for vendor booths or market stalls. If I don't select "Classifieds," then I'll get all the entries for folks wanting to RENT such items...I want to BUY...you see?
  • At the top of the list you might see an entry such as "Nikita's Freebies." Click the entry and more detailed information displays.
  • If you want even more information, click the "Profile" button. Otherwise, click the "Teleport" button to go there.
  • When you get somewhere with freebies, you'll most likely have to go through the motions of buying something. That is, you right-click and then click "Buy" or "Pay." Then you "purchase" it for $0. Don't worry...you can't get something if you don't have the money! ;)

Using Linden Dollars.......
If you want to get some Lindens, I recommend the official Lindex Exchange. Although XStreet is OK. I'll tell you more about that later. After you've done it once, the little "Buy L$" button in the viewer works. It's easy...maybe too easy! ;)
